It all started with one really big project.

Our team was invited to collaborate on a project for a large government client.

We had just 8 weeks to complete 350 individual building inspections, write 75 unique reports, and analyse hundreds of thousands of data points to make portfolio wide recommendations.

We had no room for error, and no chance to do things twice. Every inspection needed to be flawless, every piece of data accurate, and everything we produced consistent across our team of 50 specialist consultants.

Our client would be allocating more than $1b of capital expenditure based on our recommendations which had to be evidence based, transparent and publicly defensible.

Our first mobile application was simple but effective.

We knew that capturing accurate and reliable data in a consistent format with our team spread all over Australia would be a challenge. So we created a simple form for each of our consultants that could be completed on a mobile phone and sent straight to the cloud.

We invested time at the beginning of the project to understand our client’s data and reporting requirements which allowed us to focus our team on collecting the right information during inspections and ignore the temptation to over-service.

Our inspectors in the field were able to complete their inspections quickly and move straight on to the next, while their colleagues in the office were reviewing data directly from the cloud in real-time for its completeness and consistency.

We learned some hard lessons creating our reports.

The team pulled a few late nights and we made it to the finish line on schedule to hand over all of our reporting.

And our client was very happy when we handed over a bonus online database of our data and photographs all arranged behind a simple dashboard.

Our simple mobile application was efficient and our inspections were completed in record time.

But…

  • our quality assurance process was still manual,

  • our analysis required extensive excel spreadsheets, and;

  • our reports still came together using a combination of copy, paste, insert, format and print-to-pdf.

We decided to build a more powerful software platform.

And we figured we would add value for our clients if we could leave them with an enduring interactive digital record of every asset, inspection and report in an easy-to-use secure and shared workspace, and we paired that with a suite of free analytics tools.
